How Does 1 in 3 Women Translate to Employee Performance Disruption in Your Workplace?

Our resource page tells you that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men in the United States experience rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime.

We hear stats all the time, but how does that really look in the workplace?

Women

Men

How many of you knew that?

  • I did

  • I didn't!

Let's break it down even clearer. In Dr. Emma Katz's article, she gives us these numbers:

  • 1 in 5 men at the time of a Michigan study had been domestically violent toward their partner

  • 130 Million men in the U.S.

  • When scaling up that study to 130 Million population, 26 Million men are abusive

That doesn't account for any of the men who are being abused.

What we also know is that people who as children came from households where abuse was happening are more likely to be abused as adults. We also know that there are several types of abuse, and some are much harder to spot.

Understanding Employee Performance Disruption: What Leaders Need to Know

Why does THAT matter?

Because people who are being abused carry loads to work that = employee performance disruption. It interferes with their ability to:

  • fully show up mentally

  • show up on time or at all physically

  • and even leave for extended periods of time or altogether if they can't see their way clear

Leaders who have great employees who become unable to work intermittently without warning or who have to leave abruptly or permanently now are left with:

  • work you now have to shift to other staff while you seek to quickly fill the gap

  • time and financial resources you now have to utilize - unplanned & unbudgeted - to recruit, hire, and train their replacement. Hard and soft costs can total up to 125% of the salary of the talent you lost

What can you do as a leader?

Does that mean you have to now become a domestic violence expert?

No.

What it does mean is you have to lean on experts who know how to spot and intercept your enemy. They can equip you in one day to change that narrative.
