Empowering Black Women: Addressing Domestic Violence Through Courageous Fire, LLC

As a Black woman and DV survivor, I witnessed firsthand the devastating effects domestic violence had, not only on myself but also on my two daughters. Experiencing the toll it took on our health, I knew I had to make a difference. That’s why I launched Courageous Fire, LLC in 2019—to fill the gap in support for Black women and bring awareness to the ways mainstream America and the Black community can better interact with and support Black women in DV situations. Since then, we’ve partnered with 60 organizations across the US, Europe, the UK, and Canada.

Empowering Black Women DV Survivors: A Holistic Approach

By 2021, I had established a sister nonprofit to professionalize the holistic services we were already providing. Our mission expanded to help Black women DV survivors and their children receive healing and reclaim their power. Since then, we've directly impacted hundreds of individual Black women, achieving an 80% success rate in preventing them from re-entering cycles of violence.

The Intersection of Domestic Violence, Racial Misperceptions, and Health Outcomes

Research shows the combination of domestic violence and the historic racial misperceptions of Black women drastically affect our overall health outcomes. Coercive control—the much more prevalent and powerful driver of DV than physical violence—is a more reliable indicator that a perpetrator is willing to be homicidal and has lasting physical and emotional effects. With Iowa ranking #2 in DV and 51.3% of all Black femicides across the nation being DV-related, it’s clear that urgent action is needed.
