In a world where the voices of Black women have often been marginalized, the power of authentic communication and culturally expressive art cannot be understated. The ability to share one's truth and experiences not only facilitates healing and restoration but also empowers both the creator and the audience. Today, I share with you a real-life example of the healing that happens when mainstream spaces make safe spaces for us to authentically heal in the ways we organically, culturally lean into. I'm sharing the inspiring story of a mother and her daughter who, despite surviving domestic violence, have triumphed through their art, spreading messages of resilience and strength to the world.
Healing Through Creativity
Myself and my youngest daughter Sanaa, represent a resilient mother-daughter duo whose journey through adversity has found solace in creativity. Through the art forms of music, poetry, and spoken word, we have been able to navigate the traumas of our past while offering hope and healing to others. Our story is a beacon of light, showcasing the transformative power of art in overcoming challenges.
Finding Strength in Vulnerability
For me, music has been my sanctuary. Through soulful melodies and heartfelt lyrics, I relish in baring my soul, allowing listeners to connect with my pain and triumphs. Each note strums a chord of resilience, reminding us of the strength that lies within vulnerability.
Nurturing Empowerment Through Words
Sanaa, on the other hand, harnesses the power of poetry and spoken word to share her truth. Her powerful words leap from anger, dismay, disillusionment and become her vivid images of survival and empowerment. Through her art, she empowers other Black girls to speak their truths unapologetically, igniting a fire of self-expression and empowerment.
Impact Beyond Themselves
Just like us, for Black women art is not just a means of personal catharsis; it is a gift to the world. By sharing our stories and experiences we not only heal within ourselves, we also offer a lifeline to those who may be navigating similar challenges. Our authenticity serves as a reminder that healing is a journey worth taking and that no one is alone in their struggles.
Engaging with Authenticity
Now it's your turn. As professionals who make decisions that directly and indirectly impact health outcomes, understanding authentic communication and cultural expression promote wellness and mental health among Black women is paramount. Me and my daughter's story highlights the need to create safe spaces for diverse methods of healing to be woven throughout every day experiences. Through our art, we have staved off PTSD, anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, and mental exhaustion. By embracing the unique art forms that resonate with their heritage and lived experiences, the interaction with your work and the Black women you wish to serve will be more cohesive for you both.
The healing journey of Black women through authentic communication and culturally expressive art is a testament to the healing power of openness and creativity. When we embrace truths and share our stories, we uplift one another. We can all find simple ways to amplify the voices of Black women - think small or big - a working playlist for shared spaces that includes music everyone chooses; an all-out musical experience in your cafeteria with a built-in happy hour right after your last shift ends on Friday. As LinkedIn commercials have reminded us, we decide what professionalism means.
So, how can your organization be a conduit for healing without abandoning its mission? How can you create projects or find grantees to fund that embrace it? That's exactly what this social enterprise is for - to teach your teams the concepts and coach you through implementation - whether in project, policy, or practice.
Let's continue to collaborate to find the ways to improve health outcomes for Black women while we celebrate the art that lives within us.
